This study aims to clarify the external morphology and ultrastructure of the compound eyes of Diaphania glauculalis, providing a foundation for further research on its phototaxis mechanism and the development of efficient, environmentally friendly monitoring and control technologies. Scanning and transmission electron microscopy were used to observe the external morphology, internal structure and ultrastructure of the compound eyes in D. glauculalis. Additionally, key morphometric parameters were measured, including compound eye area, ommatidial area, ommatidial diameter and interommatidial angle. The compound eyes of adult D. glauculalis are positioned bilaterally on the head, separated dorsally, and arranged in an “V” shape. The left and right compound eyes are symmetrical and ovoid. The compound eye area (0.640±0.026) mm2 in females and (0.719±0.014) mm2 in males. Each ommatidium is hexagonal, with numerous corneal nipples on its surface and occasional interfacetal hairs in the gaps. Structurally, an ommatidium comprises, from outer to inner layers: cornea, crystalline cone, retinula cell, rhabdom and basement membrane. The crystalline cone is enclosed by two primary pigment cells and six secondary pigment cells. A clear zone beneath the crystalline cone indicates that the compound eye of D.glauculalis exhibit a superposition-type optical structure. Within the retinula cells, cell membranes around the ommatidial axis form specialized microvilli, which fuse to form rhabdoms. The rhabdoms are arranged in a V-shape, with the central and darker region displaying a concentric ring pattern. The compound eyes of D.glauculalis are classified as superposition eyes. Except for a significant difference in compound eye area, no major structural differences were observed between male and female adults. The distribution pattern of retinula cells follows the “11+1” arrangement.
