This study aimed to determine the resistance levels to head smut and differences among broomcorn millet germplasms using the artificial inoculation method under field conditions. A total of thirty-two broomcorn millet germplasms were evaluated at Yuzhong county, Lanzhou city, Gansu province from 2022 to 2023. Furthermore, ‘Longmi 5’ was used as the experimental subject to investigate the impact of sowing time and inoculum quantity on the prevalence of head smut in broomcorn millet. The results revealed that only one material, ‘HANACKE MANA’, exhibited immunity to head smut over two consecutive years, representing 3.1% of the tested samples. The remaining 31 materials showed high susceptibility, accounting for 96.9%. The earlier the sowing time, the more favorable the occurrence of broomcorn millet head smut. When exposed to inoculated soil containing 0.1% or more than 0.1% fungal pathogen powder, the broomcorn millet germplasms demonstrated full disease development. These findings offer valuable insights for standardizing the identification technology for resistance of broomcorn millet to head smut, the rational distribution of varieties and the core resistance source for disease resistance breeding department. |
