In recent years, with the widespread cultivation of transgenic cottons, the damage by mirid bugs has become more and more serious in China. It is urgent to develop some efficient and environment-friendly new control methods. The electrophysiological and behavioral responses of Apolygus lucorum and Adelphocoris suturalis to the extracts of Zanthoxylum bungeanum, Aucklandia costus, Periploca sepium, Phellodendron amurense and Rhus chinensis were studied. The results showed that all the five extracts could induce strong EAG responses in male and female A.lucorum, but only the extracts of Z. bungeanum and A. costus could induce strong EAG responses in male and female A.suturalis. In the olfactory test, the selection response rates of A.lucorum to the extracts of A.costus and P.sepium were less than 30%, but it was above 60% to Z. bungeanum. The selection response rates of A. suturalis to the extracts of Z. bungeanum and A.costus were less than 40%. Our results indicated that these extracts had significant repellent or attractive effects on the two cotton mirids. This study provides a theoretical basis for controlling mirid bugs in cotton fields by using Chinese herbal medicinal resources.
